Musically Inclined?

I've been playing the flute for 3 years going on 4 and I've never really needed to practice. At first I had a hard time getting one note out but from then on I didn't have the need to practice. I've noticed that even though I don't practice, I get better at the songs that we play if I know the correct rhythm. Last year I remained in the first chair flute for the whole year without even practicing out of class. I was one of the best in the band and tried learning the piccolo (even though middle school bands don't have piccolos).

I play in a high school band which doesn't allow me time to really focus on the things I need help on. Sometimes we would get music to play and I would need to practice it but never do. The next day, I would be able to play that part even though I never worked on it. It would only happen if I knew the correct rhythm. My teacher can usually tell if a person practiced before and he commented that he thought I had when I didn't.

Also I take flute lessons and I have made huge progress. I never practice the songs that she gives me, and I don't even take my flute out of its case unless I'm at school. I get better at it even though I don't practice.

Also if I concentrated too hard on trying to get the correct rhythm then I would mess up a lot. If I didn't concentrate as hard or hardly then the notes and rhythm would come more naturally to me.

Also when sight-reading songs for the first time (playing songs that we don't know and read it) I could guess what would come next and it would be correct. I would be reading the line about it then come to the end of the line and would know what note and how long to play it would come on the next line. Am I just reading the music and can guess at what would come next or am I seeing what will come next unconsciously?

Taffyinky- It just sounds like you're musically inclined. Being able to play by ear is something that a lot of musicians envy and have to try really hard to do. I can play by ear when learning songs on the piano, such as video game soundtracks and some classical pieces.

I was also in high school band (and marching band), and over the years, I flip-flopped between a variety of instruments, mainly in the percussion field. Like some posters have said, you get a feel for the rythym, and it comes naturally.

Whatever you do, though- Keep practicing and sharpening the left side of your brain (artistic/creative). If you stick in high school band, a lot of opportunities for college band, a musical part-time/full-time career, and even scholarships to propel the above possibilities could and will arrise.

Being able to create art is a great gift to have, and it certainly brings happiness to others, as well as yourself.

Taffyinky, It is a wonderful gift you have for music, so many of us wish we could do what you find comes naturally to you. My brother was the same way with any instrument he picked up. Have you ever tried playing anything outside of the wind instruments? That would be very interesting to know, as my brother could pick up ANY intrument and within a short time he could play it with ease. He also said the same thing you say, "it's the rhythm, once you've got that the rest just happens". He has since passed away and reading your story brought back my memories of him. So, thank you for that and good luck with your music. 😊 ❤

Hmm, I have played the flute for many years, actually, and I am the same way as you. You are just simply musically inclined. No psychic abilities needed for this; you can just understand music and play it well without practice. It's a great talent, though; I'm glad that you are able to play the flute so well. It is a beautiful instrument.

I once readed something about a women who'm learned playing the violin or piano before she reincarnated (?) in one of the astral planes or heaven, also maybe it could have something to do with your past life or just like plyameasong wrote just simply play by ear... 😐

It sounds to me that you can just simply play by ear. I know this because I have been playing instruments since an early age.
