Today I had a fairly interesting experience. I was on the verge of falling asleep after a long day of work, when I had a strange urge to open my eyes. When I did such, I saw what looked like a ball of tiny black fruit flies dead ahead of where I was looking as I opened my eyes. There were very many of them, and they maintained a formation of a ball that appeared to be less than six inches in diameter.
Still waking up, I didn't know what to make of it, and assumed they were just flies. I looked away, and when I looked back, they were gone. However after I focused on the spot where I had previously seen them, they slowly reappeared. They just kept rapidly moving about the circle in a manner that could be expected from a swarm of flies, but they were maintaining the same circular shape, which caused me to realize that it was unlikely they were actually flies.
After a short time of looking, the ball of "flies" began to move. They were against my wall, and then slowly made their way across my room, following the wall. As they approached a bend in my wall where they would have left my visual field, I got up and followed them. At this point, I was fully awake, so it's unlikely this was a side-effect of having just woken up. Furthermore, they were visually distinct from my wall, and given how I could put my hand in front of them and they'd disappear behind it, it seems unlikely that they were a visual artifact.
Eventually, they made their way to my door, and slowly began dissipating. I tried interacting with them, holding out my hand or trying to touch it, but it seemed unaffected. As it stopped by my door, as the individual dots began to disappear, the area inside the circle seemed to be visually warping in some odd fashion I cannot explain.
Baffled, I decided to take to the internet to see if anyone had a similar experience, but all I can seem to find is people who have seen single "dots" or single things also described as "fruit flies".
So, I ask, has anyone had a similar experience? Or better yet, does anyone have any idea what to make of this?
For reference, in the past few months, I have been having many other odd inexplicable experiences, including a vision that fully took over my visual field. I am a skeptic, a scientist, and in the past have never considered spiritual things to be valid, so for me to end up here takes something quite significant.
