I have been asking people for years that very same question and it so happened that I came across the website. Ever since I was little I could see spirits. I could not actually see them as if I was looking at another person. But like a quick glance and I kind of have to second guess myself and I just tell myself that I'm just seeing things...lol. I would always know when something is there because I would feel a presence when I would walk into a house or yard. When I would sleep, my eye would be shut but I could see everything around me. My chest would feel heavy and I felt like I was paralysed. What would really freak me out was when I would see spirits like a little girl staring at me or a lady coming out of my closet mirror doors trying to give me a necklace. I would hate it because I would get so scared that I would try to wake myself up, I would flip out because I could see everything as if I was awake but I wouldn't be and the more and more I would try to move the more freaked out I would get. The one that stuck with me and was the man dressed in black and wearing a black hat like all of ya'll stated in your experiences. Every time I would see him was when I would see him walking towards me. His presence was very strong. I would feel very frightened when he would come. Every time he would come, I would try to call out for someone to wake me because I would be so scared. Four years ago we had just moved to a different apartment and I had fell asleep and I could see everything around me but I could not move again. But my visitor wasn't the man in the hat and black clothes. It was a a demon or a devil. It was very muscular, big and strong, and horns that curled back. His eyes were dark. He always stayed in the shadows of my ceiling and then jumped on the top of my chest. I screamed for my husband to wake me up but I could move or even make a noise. That demon or devil just laughed as if he got a thrill of me being helpless. Finally I awoke and after that experience I always had a problem sleeping at night. I was scared and tired of having experiences like that. For a while everything was fine and I haven't had an experience like that again until recently we moved to a different apartment it happened again. For some reason everyone in these apartment complex have said that the experienced paranormal activities. This time I fell asleep and I could see everything in my room and my husband asleep beside me but I couldn't move. The man dressed in black and that wears the black hat came to me again and put is hand on my face and he caressed my face and said," I haven't seen you in a while." Of course I freaked out couldn't move and this time when I looked a my husband and cried out for him to wake me up. (I force a cry out so strong) My husband woke me up and said ask if I was alright and he said that I was crying in my sleep. After that time of succeeding in discovering how to get my husband to wake me up when I am stuck like that. I realize that I can't control it. He says that I cry in my dreams and it scares him. My grandmother is really ill. Last month I laid down to go to sleep and I knew my body was asleep but I could see my grandmother laying beside me and this demon sucking the life or aura around her. I could see it glowing around her and this creature laughing at me because I couldn't move. Now I have been asking people what that means. I know all of this sounds crazy for anyone to hear but I figure I would ask and maybe someone might be able to shed some light in making my sleep a little bit easier. What I want to know is why are all the things happening? What are they trying to tell me or what does this mean? I don't know who to ask about this?

Many people have described seeing 2 main types of shadow people: those wearing hats, like the one you saw, and hooded figures. The user Rain has a special interest in shadow people, so you may want to get in contact with him.

My feeling is that this shadow person may be connected to your family. Shadow people seem to follow some of us around, and there are many theories as to why that is... But the truth is, we don't know that much about them.

But I've never heard of a shadow person smoking before, so was it really a shadow person in the sense of the type that we are all thinking of?

I have seen this man once before, not in a dream though but exactly as described, he approached me as an enemy and put my friends in danger, be careful of him and whatever you do, do not let him know your fears and weaknesses

I speak to spirits on a regular basic and connect with ones around people. And what I get from this being is that hes a very old energy that been around for a very long time. Hes not here to harm you in anyway but more as a protector, he says your going through a lot of crap at the moment and Is concerned about you and your well being, he says that you haven't been yourself and are quite down on yourself. He will not harm you but he may scare you as I feel he will come closer to you at some stage. He has a funny energy about him it doesn't feel dangerous or nasty just a bit weird. He tells me your dreams may even get a bit more vivid or real feeling in the future. But to try and control your emoitions in your dreams. All I can say is when he is around see how your feeling about yourself when he is around as there may be a connection.

I'm pretty sure they are separate entities. I have little experience with physical psychic abilities but I've seen these so many times it is rather normal. Several of them wear the fedora but they were different heights. They have never bothered me but one has attacked my sister but she said she upset it. So don't upset him. Wow I too have seen this shadow man with a fedora. Here is the strangness it was a silhouette imprint on my kitchen window stayed for a few days and disappeared. I am not to sure why this happened.

I had a similar experience although I wouldn't say this guy had a black hat. I am a lightworker, mostly associated with the angelic realm however these days I seem to be branching out into new experiences. Anyways, in my dream I'm in an outdoor restraunt/bar in Brazil. Its all wood and open concept and I'm standing on an upper sort of tier looking down into what looks like a sunken living room part of this bar. I see a man, he's sitting down at one of the tables. I recognize him although his hat is down and I can't see his face because he is looking at the table. Keep in mind here that its a straw sorta hat, not black or shadow like at all. In my dream I keep waiting for him to look up so I'm staring down at him. He finally looks up and his eyes are red, he speaks to me and says "are you ready to meet the devil". It was by far one of the scariest dreams I've had. I was just developing this new ability to see angels so I went to someone and got help because the dreams kept coming. She told me that when you start to work for the light, you will get challenged by the dark. It will try to fill you with fear so that you can't carry out your mission of love and light to the people. I had to do a cleansing and I lined my boxspring with 24 clear quartz crystals to create a grid of protection. It works well... Unless you sleep somewhere else then you just have to deal with it. I have called on god in my dreams and learned that I can fight back. Anyways, I know this doesn't sound like the shadow guy but the hat thing made me want to tell my story. The angels are strong, the Archangel Michael totally rocks when you need protection... All you have to do is ask.

Wow,this guy gets around! I was just talking to my neighbor who had the same exprience. He walks through her apartment and actually says hello and he never let's her see his face, he always tilts his hat downward but she says when she see's him walk by he just goes through the front door, like transparent. He is tall and wears a hat and dresses in black. I told her not to be afraid, he may be your protector. My neighbor is elderly and lives alone and her son sometimes checks on her but she is very physic and has been since she was a child. I believe enity or sprits are drawn to people who have a good kind heart and who are blessed with certian gifts, you have a gift. I have had expiriance with shadow people as well but not in a dream. My expiriances happen in real life. The shadow man you described is a very common one, as in he is seen a lot not multiple of him. Anyway he may nit want to actualy hurt you I think he is a protector. I was walking along the side walk and across the road on the other side I saw him th shadow man he looked odd so I wanted to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. I began to walk toward him and all of a suddan he lundged toward me. He went straight through me and I felt a little force enough to knock me off my feet I fell back. Now I know now it seems as though he attacked me I thought so to but the next thin that happened supprized me a car flew past me before my eyes. If I ha still been standing there I would have been hit. So that is my reasoning on why I think that shadow man is actualy good.

Hey...I'm new here but I wanted to offer you something... Who knows, it could help. I had something SO scary happen last night but I can't post it right now because that part is down at the moment, so I guess I want to acknowledge the "annoyance" factor, because that's what I would want.:)
I would start by asking your angels to come forth and protect you. If you aren't familiar with them google dorreen virtue and use that as a base. Then I would meditate as someone said and ask that guy what he wants. How can you help him? Tell him you aren't cool with him just sitting there staring at you but you know he wants something so to please speak up in a way you can understand.
Then I would state affirmations over and over in your day life that you are safe and that only good comes your way.
Maybe he's not speaking because you haven't given him permission? Its always creepy when people don't speak... In waking life or dreams.

Lastly, I would ask the Universe (in whatever way you see fit) what you are supposed to do with this talent. I believe its there if you want it... Since you are 17, theoretically, you are a young adult, legal wise, you are still a child. It could be this is happening because you are at a point in your life where you are still open (like children very much are) while being able to grasp this very adult concept. These ghosts could be coming to you to see how "open" you are. Which ironically you are here asking how you can be more "open"... Hmm. I call this synchronicity. Its up to you I think. If you want it, learn to own it. If you don't, send it away.

Meditate about that shadowy man, and ask it to talk to you, force it if you must. That man could be your families protector.
