Spirit Guide Possibly, Or Something Else

I met a spirit that I became very close with a few years back, I believe when I was 12 or 13, I'm now 17. We had a tight relationship and he was always there for me, and always said he was "protecting" me. From what I'm not entirely sure, but I do have some ideas. Also, he disappeared for a few months and when he came back he was apologizing, saying he was back for good because before he was fighting. Fighting what? I don't really understand. A few times before he tried to come to me, I was walking down the street from the school (where I met him) and as I was walking, it was night, there really wasn't anyone around and he appeared in front of me, then just screamed, burst into flames and was gone. I was very confused and frightened for some time after that. Apart from that, my abilities are seeming to open up again, which has me very happy, but it's still him that I can't contact. BUT, I know he's here, I've asked for signs, got them, and I can feel him, I know the feeling of his energy around me but it's practically impossible to even speak with him. I've never been able to see him, but could feel him touch me and speak to him. I need some help understanding why my abilities when it comes to him are seeming to slow down. Also, could he be a spirit guide? And I would like to know how to contact them, I've tried to get in touch with my spirit guide but just can't seem to do it. I have so many spirits not too fond of me that reaching spirits I WANT to reach seems practically impossible. I need some tips on meeting my spirit guide and reaching him again.
